Letter from Homer A. Johnson to Walter A. Stevens, 1868 August 4
Scope and Contents
Letter dated August 4, 1868 from Homer A. Johnson, Late Deputy for Illinois to Walter A. Stevens, Deputy for Illinois pertaining to the Frank J. Herron case which concerned a violation of the jurisdictional rights of the Grand Consistory of Louisiana. Johnson confirms that he did believe that Herron was a U.S. army officer when he granted a dispensation to receive the Scottish Rite degrees in the Chicago bodies. He furthermore includes a copy of the statement he had received from D. M. Carr, Comander in Chief, vouching for Herron. [If Herron had been an army officer, he would not be tied to the Southern Jurisdiction for residency.]
