Scope and Contents A circular letter from the Supreme Council expelling Sovereign Grand Commander Edward A. Raymond and Grand Secretary General Simon W. Robinson, dated May 22, 1862. On August 24, 1860, Sovereign Grand Commander Raymond abruptly closed the Supreme Council sine die, leading to the Schism of 1860 and the formation of two competing Supreme Councils in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, one led by Raymond and the other by Killian Van Rensselaer. Letter from J. J. J. Gourgas to Dr. Winslow Lewis of Boston. Gourgas thanks him for a fraternal call and described his role in the early Scottish Rite, saying that he constitutionally abdicated his position of Sovereign Grand Commander in August of 1851 and left management to Giles Fonda Yates, as Lieutenant Grand Commander.
