Biographical / Historical

McIlyar Hamilton Lichliter was born in 1877 in Pennsylvania, graduated from DePauw University in 1900, became a congregationalist pastor in 1919, and was Melvin Johnson’s assistant from 1942-1957.

Lichliter was an active Mason in his blue lodge and the Scottish Rite since 1907, before becoming Johnson’s full-time assistant in 1942 and serving as Grand Prior. He was the first editor of the News-letter that eventually became the magazine distributed today as The Northern Light. Lichliter was also tasked with studying the history of Scottish Rite rituals and their potential need for revision. Much of his work informed later revised rituals for the Scottish Rite.

Lichliter retired in 1957 and died in 1961.
