Biographical / Historical
Giles Fonda Yates (1798-1859) was crowned a Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the 33° in 1825 and admitted an active member of the Southern Supreme Council. He transferred his membership to the Northern Supreme Council once the matter of jurisdiction of the two Supreme Councils was settled and was one of the most active members of the Supreme Council during its early years. Yates succeeded John James Joseph Gourgas as Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, on August 24, 1851.
