Scope and Contents

The collection includes membership cards, receipts, and correspondence in regards to the Leacy and Duncan families' membership in various fraternal organizations. The papers of Sabrina A. Leacy, a Past Grand Chief of the Pythian Sister for the state of Massachusetts, date from 1949-1962 and consist of certificates, payment slips, and a meeting notice letters for Pythian Sisters and the Rebekahs. Gertrude and Oscar Duncan records show their involvement with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Rebekah Assemblies, and Royal Arcanum. The papers of Ruby Duncan include letters and certificates regarding her involvement in the International Order of Rainbow for Girls and the Pythian Sisters.

Biographical / Historical

The Duncan and Leacy families consisted of Sabrina Leacy and Oscar Duncan (sister and brother), Gertrude Duncan (wife of Oscar), and Ruby Duncan (daughter of Oscar and Gertrude).

Sabrina Adelphia Leacy was born on April 26, 1882, to James Duncan and Mary Archibald in Hansford, Canada. She came to America on September 16, 1899, and lived in Boston, Massachusetts. She married Martin Leacy (1877-1954) on December 30, 1908. Leacy petitioined to become an American citizen on June 27, 1929. Leacy was highly involved in the Pythian Sisters. She served in several leadership positions, including as the Grand Chief of Massachusetts from 1934-1935. Leacy died on May 23, 1967.

Oscar Duncan (1879-1964) was born to these same parents in Hansford, Canada, and came to America on May 12, 1900. He married Gertrude Vandergrift (1882-1955) on May 19, 1909. Both were active with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekah Assemblies where they lived in Belmont, Mass., and Oscar Duncan was also involved with Royal Arcanum. Their daughter Ruby Duncan (1911-2007) was active with the Pythian Sisters and International Order of Rainbow for Girls in the Belmont, Mass. region as well.
