Many groups worked to support American soldiers during World War I. The American Red Cross provided and mailed this postcard filled in by soldier Charles Kurzenknabe (1888-1962). Kurzenknabe directed it to his father in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to let him know he had reached Europe. The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal group, provided stationary and postcards, like this one, for soldiers' use. Along with sending mail, soldiers also received mail from home. From July 1917 to June 1918, the post office delivered 35 million letters addressed to members of the American Expeditionary Forces.
