Scope and Contents

In this manuscript copy of a letter to Nathan N. Whiting, Yates acknowledges the receipt of Whiting's request for a dismission or demit from Albany Sovereign Consistory. Yates explains he can do nothing in his capacity as a Grand Inspector of the 33rd of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction since he does not have the authority. Briefly explains the transfer of jurisdictional authority from the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, to the Supreme Council, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, and that he is not the Southern Jurisdiction's agent in the state of New York. Yates believes, though, that there should be no objection to Whiting's request; however, Whiting can only receive the dismission or demit from Albany Sovereign Consistory when in session. Concludes by providing an explanation to the recipient, possibly John James Joseph Gourgas or another member of the Supreme Council, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, that Whiting, a charter member of Albany Sovereign Consistory and Baptist minister, was being forced to give up Freemasonry or lose his place as a Baptist clergyman.
