Biographical / Historical

The National Grange, also known as the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, was established in 1867. The Grange is the oldest American agriculture advocacy organization. Unlike other early fraternal organizations, the National Grange is, and always has been, open to all individuals.

East Charlemont Grange, No. 261, was organized in October 25, 1906 and dissolved in 1917. When it dissolved, Luana J. Manning, then Treasurer, deposited the remaining funds in the bank in 1918 after disagreements on what should be done with the money. After Manning's death in 1928, the remaining members attempted to retrieve the money taking the executor of Manning's estate to court.
