From "Sowing the Seeds of Liberty" exhibition:
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of April 19, 1775, Concord residents commissioned Daniel Chester French to sculpt a memorial to the farmers who became soldiers in defense of their way of life. Over the years, the idea of the minuteman, often represented by French’s statue, has been used to symbolize selfless patriotism and freedom. Here the U.S. government pictures its own version of the minuteman to encourage Americans to purchase bonds during World War II.
