President James A. Garfield died on September 19, 1881. A native of Ohio, Garfield had expressed his wish to be buried at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. The cemetery offered a burial site for Garfield to his widow Lucretia Garfield (1832-1918). In 1885 the Garfield Memorial Committee began construction on a memorial at the site. The building was completed and dedicated on May 30, 1890. Garfield, and three other members of his family, including Lucretia, are buried beneath the memorial.
