Scope and Contents

Collection of P.E.O. fraternal materials including their Constitution and By-Laws (1950), Yearbooks (1957-2009), and Directories (1992-1994). The materials are from two different chapters of PEO--one in New Jersey and the other in Connecticut. Many of the items include Shellem's name or other notes, while others she collected from other members which created a nearly complete series of Yearbooks from Chapter X, between 1957 and 1994. Also includes a photograph of Esther Shellem, and her husband Edwin, with a note on the reverse that indicates the photograph may have been taken at their 50th wedding anniversary in the 1980s.

Biographical / Historical

Esther Helen Kerr Shellem (1907-1997) was a lifelong PEO member of PEO Chapter X in Maplewood, NJ since the 1950s. Dawn Byron Hutchins also became a member of Chapter X in the 1980s, and eventually became caretaker of Shellem. They became members of PEO Chapter K in Simmsubry, CT upon relocating there in 1992. P.E.O. is a philanthropic educational service organization, founded at Iowa Wesleyan University in 1869.

The book Out of the Heart: A Century of P.E.O. 1869-1969 by Stella Clap (HS1510 .P6 1968was removed to be placed in the Library. A ceramic tea bag holder and ceramic pin holder with lid (2013.013.1-2) were removed to be placed in Collections.
