Biographical / Historical

James Kimball was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on October 14, 1808. He was active in municipal and political affairs and was elected Chairman of the First Free Soil County Committee for the County of Essex and worked towards a coalition of the Free Democracy and Free Soilers which eventually led to the formation of the Republican Party. His work with fraternal organizations began in 1831 with his election to membership of the Salem Charitable Mechanic Association. During his lifetime, he received both Templar and Scottish Rite degrees, through 33°.
