Biographical / Historical

William Gillette (1853-1937) was born in Harford, Connecticut, the son of politician, Francis Gillette and Elizabeth Daggett Hooker. His work in the theatre included both writing and acting, e.g. "The Professor," 1881 in which he starred in the title role of his own comedy. Gillette won high praise for his adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories in "Sherlock Holmes." He returned to the role of the legendary sleuth for over thirty years. After his wife's death in 1888, Gillette built a huge castle in Hadlyme, Connecticut where he retreated when he was away from the theater. Gillette Castle is now a Connecticut State Park and is open to the public.
