Scope and Contents

Newspaper entitled The Independent issued on Thursday, May 23, 1861, with several pages. The article "The Southern Madness. How Shall it be Dealt with?" analyizes the growing civil war between the Union and the South. There is another article entitled "The Theory of Secession" describes that many citizens of the USA (especially the Union) agree that secession is a "revolutionary proceeding" and must be suppressed by "an appeal to arms."
