Scrapbook of news clippings regarding Masons and Catholic Church, 1924-1969

Clippings are from papers throughout the United States, such as the San Francisco Chronicle, Buffalo Evening News, Williamsport Sun-Gazette, and the New York Times, and are dated from 1924-1969. The bulk of the articles are from the 1960s. The collection focuses on the relationship of Freemasonry, religion and politics. Several articles report Sovereign Grand Commander Bushnell's strong statements banning the discussion of religion and politics at lodge meetings. During the Kennedy presidential campaign, some lodges were urging Masons not to vote Democratic, due to Kennedy's affiliation with the Catholic Church. In particular, articles address the actions of Leslie M. Scott, Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Scottish Rite, in Oregon. Bulk of articles report on the improving relations between Freemasonry and the Catholic Church and include coverage of Catholic bishops speaking at Lodge functions and the cooperation of the Catholic Knights of Columbus and Masons in working towards joint public service programs. Some articles also address the strained relations between Protestant clergy and Freemasonry, and the work toward recognizing and eventually integrating African Americans into traditionally white Masonic organizations. Scrapbook also contains two 8 x 10 in. black and white photographs dated March 29, 1967, depicting meeting of leaders of Knights of Columbus and 33° A. A. Scottish Rite Freemasonry for the Northern Jurisdiction of the U.S. held in New York City.
