Scope and Contents
Henry S. Kuhn's World War I photograph album with materials dating from 1917-1977 [bulk 1917-1919]. The album was accompanied by 2 copies of the Park Ridge [Illinois] Herald, September 15, 1944, which featured Kuhn as "This Week's Personality". The original article was photocopied and is housed with scrapbook. Photo album contains 165 black and white photographs and photo postcards [one in color], most showing life aboard a ship during World War I. Shipboard photos include images of boxing and wrestling matches, diving off quarterdeck, band concerts, running races on deck, pie eating contest, 4th of July obstacle race, church service, and abandoning ship drills. Many of the photo postcards bear slogans such as "It's A Great Life If You Don't Weaken." There is also a postcard of Fifth Ave., New York City, with Savings Bonds Banners waving from buildings. Photographs of ships include the U.S.S. Frederick, the San Diego, the New Mexico, the Jupiter, the Madawaska, and the Zeelandia. Many of the photos were taken in the North Sea and there are several sighting an iceberg. There are also photos of shooting at periscopes. Kuhn has also included a typed listing "Troop Transports U.S. S. Frederick. Escort WW I 1917-1918-1919." Several loose papers are housed inside back cover of the scrapbook: a copy of a letter from Ralph Scales to Kuhn dated March 30, 1977 and photocopies of ships and street views from Brest and St. Nazaire, France. The last page of the album houses a membership certificate to Kuhn from the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, dated May 7, 1965.
