Biographical / Historical

Pierre van Cortlandt, son of Lieutenant Governor Pierre van Cortlandt, served as major general in militia where one of his aides was James Fenimore Cooper. He studied law with Alexander Hamiliton and was a presidential elector for Jefferson in 1800 and for William H. Harrison in 1840. He was a candidate on the defeated Henry Clay ticket in 1844.
