French Postcards, 1918-1919 France Gift of J. Phillip Berquist, A87/021/1 After fighting stopped in November of 1918, many soldiers waited months before the Army arranged their return home. Some, like John Berquist (1894-1951) of Watertown, Massachusetts, took advantage of the opportunity to travel when they could get leave. On his journeys Berquist collected many postcards. He sent some home to his parents, others he saved as souvenirs of his experience overseas.

Monte Carlo Postcards, 1919 France Gift of J. Phillip Berquist, A87/021/1 In January of 1919, soldier John Berquist (1894-1951) enjoyed an excursion to Monte Carlo. There he purchased postcards illustrated with a drawing of an unlucky gambler. He sent one to his mother with the message: ""I visited this place this afternoon and it is wonderful. Didn't see any money laying around loose."""
