This collection contains a comprehensive record of Dewey Chapter, No. 420, Order of the Eastern Star, located in Port Leyden, New York, from 1926-1970. This collection includes membership certificates, special dispensations, dimits, meeting notices, death annoucenments, reports on the Grand Chapter of New York, Order of the Eastern Star, Annual Sessions, letters and notices from the Grand Chapter of New York, financial receipts and reports from Dewey Chapter, No. 420, and The Lewis-Oneida District (of which Dewey Chapter was a part of), and a history of the Dewey Chapter, No. 420. Subjects include World War II and the Eastern Star constributions for the war effort, the creation of Order of the Constellation of Junior Stars (an organization for young girls from Masonic families), the Eastern Star Home and infirmary in Oriskany, New York, and features anti-Communist sentiment.

Biographical / Historical
Dewey Chapter, No. 420, was organized and given a charter in 1908. Dirigo Chapter, No. 390, in Turin, New York, was the Mother Chapter. The Chapter was named after Bro. C. D. Dewey, the first worshipful master of Port Leyden Lodge, No. 669, in November 1867. The Chapter met on the second floor of the Riggs Hardware building, also called "Port Theatre."In 1925, Port Leyden Lodge, No. 669 and Dewey Chapter, No. 420, moved to a new building puchased from the Methodist Church. In 1958, Dewey Chapter had 91 members. In 1968, the chapter had 72 members.

Processing Information
The collection came in black binders with no identifying information or writing on them. The materials were loosely places in sleeves without any adhesive. The contents were removed from the binders, keeping them in their original order. Each binder became a separate file.
