Lowell Chapter, Order of DeMolay, collection on integration attempt, 1953-1960
Scope and Contents
Collection of letters, one telegram, drafts of letters, and reports concerning the attempt to admit an African-American boy to the Lowell Chapter, Order of DeMolay. The Lowell Chapter took steps to admit an African American boy to membership, although such membership was prohibited by DeMolay. The result was that DeMolay removed the longtime and honored "Dad" Advisor Frank H. Fiske from all duties and connection with the Lowell chapter and the DeMolay movement. Another member of the Advisory Council resigned in protest. Included in this collection are the letters of dismissal and a telegram from Frank Land of National Headquarters confirming that Fiske was dismissed (without a mention of any reasons for this action). Printed reports and forms provide information about DeMolay during that time period, but make no reference to this controversy.
