The Woman's Land Army of America, 1918 Herbert Andrew Paus (1880-1946) Gift of the Galford Family, A2006/48/1

With men joining the Army or employed in war-related manufacturing, some industries turned to women workers to fill positions. Modeled on a British program, Woman's Land Army organized women, many of them college students new to farm work, to help maintain agricultural production from 1917 to 1919. Sponsored by universities and nonprofit organizations, the Woman's Land Army program put an estimated 20,000 women to work on farms during World War I. Through the program, they earned the same pay as male farm workers.
