Biographical / Historical
Mildred Halfmann (1917-2011), born to E. W. Luther (1883-1951) and Martha Halfmann(1888-1974), grew up in New York City, with her brother Edward (1914-2005) who was three years older. The family had German roots. On her mother’s side, both of her grandparents, Cord H. Schroeder (1856-1924) and Maria E. Strubbe (1859-1921), were born in Germany, but meet and married in New York on April 27, 1887. On her father’s side, his father was born in Germany while his mother had been born in New York to two German immigrants. Mildred’s parents, Martha and Luthor, married on April 18, 1911. The family was Lutheran and attended church at the Church of the Advent in New York City. Mildred had her confirmation in the Spring of 8th grade. Mildred attended St. Agatha’s school in New York City and later went to college at Bouvé-Boston School of Physical Education in Boston, Massachusetts. She married Martin A. Gilman (1915-2009) on June 29, 1940, and they had two children, Edward and Peter Gilman.
