The Moon boardinghouse, 1862-1864
Item
Identifier: A2018-029-013
Scope and Contents
This patriotic business card for Frederick Stieringer’s boardinghouse, “The Moon,” most likely served as an advertisement to soldiers and the family members of wounded Union soldiers who were housed at the nearby Soldiers' Depot at 50-52 Howard Street. IRS records and the 1862-1863 New York City directory lists Frederick Stieringer as the owner of “The Moon.” It was established in 1862, the year before the Soldiers' Depot was organized, and resided on Howard Street until sometime in 1864.
