Blank Masonic membership certificate from Essex Lodge, circa 1795
Scope and Contents
Printed Masonic certificate with imagery of drapery along the top with two columns at the center and three steps along the bottom. There are two Native figures at bottom left and two classical figures at bottom right. On the top step are a box, a book, a square and compasses, and a globe. There is text at left and right on the far side of the columns. In between the columns, it reads, "To all Brethren through the world, Anno Lucis / We, the members of Essex Lodge, regularly constituted / at Salem, Massachusetts, North America, / by a Charter from the Grand Lodge, holden at / Boston, A.L. 5791, have received our Brother / , + in due form conferred upon him / the [space] degree of [space] & in Testimony / of our approbation and friendship, we deliver these / presents, that he may receive the reward of a / worthy Brother from all the faithful, wherever dispersed." At bottom left it reads, "J. Hiller Junr. del." At bottom right, "S. [illeg], Sc." There is a notation handwritten on the back in brown ink, "papers relating / to Wm. [illeg] / late affairs."
