Faneuil Hall Riot, or Masonry Unveiled broadside, circa 1830
Scope and Contents
Anti-Masonic ballad titled "Faneuil Hall Riot, or Masonry Unveiled" and printed in the form of a broadside. This broadside solicits support for the Anti-Masonic political party. It describes an August 1830 meeting where Masons and Anti-Masons discussed whether a Mason could perform the duties of a public office in an impartial manner. The broadside mentions both Boston's mayor Harrison Gray Otis (1765-1848) and sheriff Charles Sumner (1776-1839). Neither man was a Mason. At top center is an image of a building, probably Faneuil Hall in Boston. The text is printed in three columns.
