Scope and Contents
Enlistment contract for a group of men from Massachusetts to serve as guards for prisoners of war for Leiutenant General Burgoyne's men after General Gates won the Battle of Saratoga (1777). British Leiutenant General John Burgoyne (1723-1792) was defeated by American General Horatio Gates (1728-1806) at Saratoga, New York. This decisive defeat hastened the French recognition of the United States.
