Can Vegetables, 1918 J. Paul Verrees (b. 1889) Printed by Gatchel & Manning, Engraver Philadelphia Gift of Andrew S. Dibner, A2000/37/06

Along with dramatic or stern messages, poster artists sometimes employed humor. Belgian artist, J. Paul Verrees'a wounded soldier recovering in America'used a caricature of the enemy to advertise a National War Garden Commission booklet on canning. This Commission gave instructions on gardening to families and community groups, and provided the opportunity for amateur gardeners to purchase fertilizer, seeds and tools at wholesale prices. The Commission hoped that the window card recipient would 'place it where it will be seen by those whom it may urge to conserve and preserve vegetables and fruits for winter use, thereby aiding to win the war.'
