Sow the Seeds of Victory!, 1918 James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) Gift of Andrew S. Dibner, A2000/37/05

When he embarked upon Division of Pictorial Publicity work, James Montgomery Flagg was already a famous illustrator. He created the well-known 1917 Uncle Sam poster with the slogan, 'I Want You for the U.S. Army.' Magazines and advertisers had paid Flag as much as $10,000 a sketch, but he, like other artists, donated his skills to the war effort. This card came with a notice asking the recipient to display it 'where it will carry its message to those whom it may inspire to make their gardens munition plants and win the war.'
