Evangeline Booth (1865-1950), the Salvation Army's U.S. commander, convinced General John J. Pershing (1860-1948) to send her female workers to Europe during World War I. These women set up huts, canteens, and recreation and meeting rooms for servicemen. At some of these facilities, workers served hot doughnuts and other refreshments. They also organized recreational activities, mended clothes, and held religious services.
