Victory Is a Question of Stamina, 1917 Harvey T. Dunn (1884-1942) Printed by Lathan Litho & Ptg. Co. Brooklyn, New York Gift of Diana Korzenik and Andrew S. Dibner, A99/81/17

To document the front, where civilians and the press were not permitted, the Secretary of War commissioned eight official artists and made them captains in the Army Engineer Reserve Corps. Harvey Dunn, the artist who illustrated this work was one of them. Dunn, formerly a newspaper illustrator, sketched on paper fitted on rollers in a box so he could quickly wind a finished picture away and replace it with a clean piece of paper. He was one of the few artists who joined soldiers as they "went over the top" or left the trenches in an attempt to gain enemy ground.
