While many of the artists who contributed their work to the Division of Pictorial Publicity stayed in New York, some traveled to the French front. Although the work produced by these artists"more than 270 sketches and drawings"was intended to document the war, the U. S. Food Administration and the Division of Pictorial Publicity adopted some for use in posters such as this one. In late 1918 and early 1919, an exhibition of works by the official Army artists toured the United States.
