When America declared war on Germany in April of 1917, artists stood at the ready. Members of the New York-based Society of Illustrators offered their services to help get the government"s message out in poster form. These volunteer artists who had previously illustrated stories for newspapers, magazines and book publishers formed the Division of Pictorial Publicity of the Committee on Public Information. The core group met weekly in New York to receive assignments and send completed concepts to Washington. In twenty months the Division created hundreds of advertisements, cartoons, window cards, subway car cardsand 700 poster designs.
