View of group of men in full regalia or uniform sitting and standing. Location is Quincy, Massachusetts. Dated June 13-14, 1927. Knights of Malta considers itself to be the most ancient fraternal order in existence, tracing its origin back to A.D. 1048, and questionable linkage to the Crusades in 1099. The fraternal order was introduced to the United States in 1870 by receiving its charter from a Scottish Commandery. Its stated role is to defend the Protestant faith, defend civil and religious liberty, and practice benevolence. (Schmidt. Fraternal Organizations, p.181-182)
