Scope and Contents
The William Caleb Loring Illustrated Envelope Collection spans the years 1861-1898, with the bulk of material dating from 1861 to 1865. The collection includes over 1,000 envelopes, each adorned with a patriotic graphic depicting a popular Civil War era theme. Topics depicted include political issues, such as slavery and secession; the abolitionist John Brown; Union and Confederate soldiers and their regiments; Civil War battles such as the Siege of Fort Sumter and Shiloh; Union and Confederate politicians such as Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis; as well as a wide array of Union and Confederate iconography.
