Correspondence from Cerneau bodies to Wheeler Cable, 1897

 File
Identifier: A2002-018-007

Scope and Contents

Folder 7: Correspondence [34 letters] from Cerneau bodies to Wheeler Cable discussing proposed amendments to Consitution and possibility of union of Cerneau Scottish Rite bodies. Many letters reference the tension from both within and without, resulting in an unsettled condition of the Scottish Rite as organized by Joseph Cerneau. Several letters discuss the work toward union with the Bayliss Body. M. W. Bayliss is quoted in one letter as presiding over the "Supreme Council for the United States of America." Letters document both criticism and support of William H. Peckham and his role in the negotiations for a union, and the weakening of the Scottish Rite body over which he presided.
