Correspondence from Cerneau bodies to Wheeler Cable, 1895

 File
Identifier: A2002-018-005

Scope and Contents

Folder 5: Correspondence [40 letters] from Cerneau bodies to Wheeler Cable; bulk of letters from Grand Orient of New York. Letters reflect the tension within the Scottish Rite Masonry as organized by Joseph Cerneau with references to strategies to purchase the papers of William H. Peckham who served as Sovereign Grand Commander of one branch of the Cerneau Supreme Council until his resignation in 1889. There is discussion of how to lure Peckham and a Br. Leveridge back into the Rite to try to gain custody of these papers. Letters also document a "quiet movement" to consolidate 5 dormant Consistories in Virnginia into one strong central body in Richmond. Empty envelope with penned listing of correspondents accompanies letters.
