Scope and Contents

The correspondences discuss articles requested by Norton from The Keystone and other periodicals, written debate between Maccalla and Norton, Norton’s idea of the Franklin ritual, St. John’s Lodge in the 1700s. It also includes Maccalla’s responses to Norton’s research inquiries and one letter from Jacob Norton addressed to Maccalla.

Biographical / Historical

Masonic writer Clifford Paynter Maccalla was editor of The Keystone (a Masonic Journal) and wrote many works on American Freemasonry. He served as Grand Master of Pennsylvania from 1889-1890. He was born in 1837 and died in 1892.
