Subject Files, Miscellaneous, 1932-1961
Scope and Contents
The records in this series were originally stored in separate “Miscellaneous” boxes, many of the documents loose, with no identifiable organization. Some files contain what appear to be researcher notes, indicating that the files may have been removed from their original location and not returned. The files were gathered together under this constructed series and, using the example of the Subject Files, were given derived folder names where applicable and arranged alphabetically. The records in this series, the bulk of which are in the form of correspondence, document Johnson's years as Sovereign Grand Commander. Correspondence from Henry Ford and J. Edgar Hoover can be found here. Other notable records include files on the Gourgas Memorial and Dedication, Johnson's Grand Masters Conference address in 1942, and Johnson's “Universality of Freemasonry,” in which he states his belief that men of any monotheistic faith should be welcome into the brotherhood of Freemasonry.
